Cultural taboo to eat in the street

Saw this article about a cultural taboo in Rwanda connected to eating in public. Interesting examples of breaking with tradition... Thoughts?

  1. I think this woman's efforts to help these women in a time of need with something as happy as ice cream is very inspiring! What better a way to help people than through ice cream! It has potential to generate the profit and income that is needed and it provides for a tasty treat, if only others saw it that way. It is really surprising to me that in the Rwandan culture discourage the public display of personal needs except for in specific mourning periods. I think that this is odd because I personally do not consider ice cream to be a personal need, I consider it to be a want. Something of indulgence for a person. Coming from a culture where eating out in general is considered somewhat of an indulgence in itself it is interesting seeing a different side of a culture where food is more scarce and considered to be a 100% personal need. It really makes you reflect on your own personal practices alongside our culture and everyday living compared to others.

  2. This is an amazing example of business ethics. This shows just how much an "easy sell" could actually be a hard sell. This is so insightful and shows just how much more symbolism is related to in businesses in different countries, especially in Africa. Although this shop was meant to help women, it didn't prove to be such a thing. Eating in public there was so unusual to the public there. Something so innocent as a banana is seen as sinful and doesn't respect themselves.

The idea that one is going forward with what is inspiring, like eating ice cream, is so unbelievably insightful. It is inspiring how much such a little thing like ice cream can do in a culture. It shows how so many things, like convenience in our culture can really inhibit communication. This shows how much people's conveniences with communication are seen as the norm now, but in the entire world, they really aren't the norm. This example shows just how far we've come as Americans. And even though some may see this as a hindrance to society, we are still ahead of some cultures, and that's something to be proud of.

  3. This is a really nice article! The idea of it being wrong to show your emotions in public was what stood out most in this article. In certain areas of the world, cultural norms are upheld in a more strict manner than in others. When I read this article, I thought that she was doing a wonderful thing, but it also made me wonder if there would be any ongoing backlash from some people in her community because of her business.

Hopefully this woman's effort to make her area happier will be appreciated by the majority in her community and maybe those that are against the idea now will come to accept it when they realize how happy it makes the people who live there.
