Public Discourse Ethics pertains to the protection and promotion of the "good" of public space. It seeks to open up dialogue in the "marketplace of ideas" and invite a safe space for different ideas and people. We must value the public space and keep our private and public lives divided, in doing so we can reclaim the public arena and enrich public decision making. We should be open and listen to new ideas that enter to "marketplace" and be willing take it in to make decisions. That is where public accountability plays a role, so that we don't make the same mistakes we've made before.
There was big emphasis placed on the private life and public life being separated. As we build upon each separately, they can inform each other on making decisions. Although there can be certain times when there's invasion of private life in the public life or vice versa. Such examples given in the text were emailing at work during a social event in your private life or texting a friend while working in your public life. However, it's important to note that we just can't force one upon another. An example of this would be at work. I work at a small business and my boss always wants to us to bond and get to know each other. Although that is great, I try not to get too personal with the interns because they are in different positions at work than I am and I would rather keep my privacy in certain areas. As well as if an intern gets fired, I would want freedom of movement because it would be awkward to keep in touch with them as "friends." Not every can be your friend, and some people connect differently. In order to run a business, we can't get too friendly in our public space. So that's why it's important to keep public life and private life separate.
