Blog Post 2, Chapter 2

One of the aspects of this chapter that really intrigued me was the idea of the Narrative. Since as an English major, I deal with narratives (although they are mostly fiction) everyday.  The one line that really got me thinking was, "This public story explains the way the world works and the meaning of human life" (p. 37).  This is interesting to me since I have always dealt with narratives trying to explain the human condition in abstract ways that really have no "true" bearing on life.  This difference is key since, this narrative is vastly more important since it actually dictates how people live their lives, make life choices, and simply communicate with each other.  However as the chapter states these narratives are not uniform across all cultures or countries.  Due to this we must be careful when interacting or communicating with a different culture as they do not have the same core beliefs as mine does. Even with these differences there is common ground to be found.

The scene in the movie that really pointed this out to me was when Jean ValJean and Javert realized that they have some common traits with each other. Since they both have made successes from themselves even thought they faced horrible odds.  Even thought the vast differences between them as a lawman and a escaped criminal, they realized how they both have faced similar struggles and are now fighting for a common good.  Jean ValJean with his vast wealth, and Javert by upholding the law.  Even though their narratives are totally different they found a common ground at least respect the actions of the other.
