Chapter 4; Common Sense

The section of this chapter regarding common sense was very clear and really covered all of the different aspects of common sense. I found the different other two metaphors of communication ethics praxis - learning and theory - to be more difficult to understand their relation to common sense. Learning was a bit easier to follow in the sense that common sense is learned over time and is not something that is innate to us. The concept of theories here is still a little confusing.

This common sense section really applies well to my Process of Persuasion class. We discuss a lot regarding attitudes and what makes up and attitude and how one can change or alter an attitude. To us an attitude is somewhat like an opinion; it is based off of a value of belief of some sort. Like common sense, you need to learn and have some sort of knowledge pertaining to material relevant to an attitude to take away an opinion or stance that is specific to you based off of your individual values and beliefs. In order to persuade someone to change or alter their attitude/opinion one must teach them about the alternative options that are out there. Common sense deals more with the originating attitude because it is a repeated action that becomes "common sense" to preform, until more learning happens and that action is altered and evolves into a new action of common sense.
